Oscarland

Installation containing video with and without sound, polaroids, inkjet prints with stroboscopes. In the main video I document buildings of Oscar Niemeyer with shooting Polaroid photos and immediately filming the developing Polaroids with a video camera. The work reflects on the confidence in the future of the past. Polaroids, an invention from the year 1949, were as futuristic as the buildings from Niemeyer during the time. Form and content affect each other in the video installation; the piece is about ‘becoming’. Present, past and future blend together. I chose to film the situations without people to emphasize the science fiction aspect. As if the buildings stand there for extraterrestrial beings or just landed out of space. The style of Niemeyers architecture is modernistic, utopian and futuristic. Because he is an influential architect his visual language is also recognized in the buildings made by other architects. Niemeyer defined the looks of Brazilian cities. This is best visible in Brasilia, an utopian city which was built from scratch on a deserted plateau at the end of the 50’s. Oscarland shows this architecture. I also filmed many, many helicopters in São Paulo. The helicopter traffic seems old-fashioned and futuristic at the same time. Being in São Paulo is as if you have ended up in a science fiction film: a metropolis of eighteen million people, six million cars, highways which cross the city, helicopters in the air, masts with blinking lights, sending information through the air. In Dutch now an excerpt from my presentation at De Veemvloer Amsterdam: São Paulo is de tweede stad ter wereld met de meeste helicopters in de lucht. Na Los Angeles. Het is immers sneller en veiliger om je per helicopter te verplaatsen in deze metropool. Rijken nemen de helicopter naar het strand, 80 km verderop, of gaan ermee naar een shoppingmall. Ook banken maken veelvuldig gebruik van helicopters bij geldtransport. En de politie voor de patrouilles. Er hangt in São Paulo dan ook een constante brom in de lucht. Dat helicopterverkeer heeft iets ouderwets en futuristisch tegelijk. Het lijkt alsof je in een fifties science fiction film bent beland. Het was een timewarp. Waar men destijds aan dacht bij de toekomst, is in São Paulo uitgekomen: een metropool van 18 miljoen mensen, 6 miljoen auto’s, brede wegen die de stad doorkruisen, helicopters in de lucht, zendmasten met knipperende lichten die dag en nacht informatie door de lucht verzenden. Dat gevoel van science fiction wordt helemaal voelbaar in de buurt van een gebouw van Oscar Niemeyer. Zijn signatuur: modernistisch, utopisch, futuristisch, tropisch. Omdat Niemeyer een invloedrijk architect is, is zijn beeldtaal niet alleen in zijn eigen gebouwen te zien, maar ook in die van andere Braziliaanse architecten zoals tijdgenoot Lucio Costa en architecten die hij beïnvloed heeft. Oscar Niemeyer heeft de looks van Braziliaanse steden bepaald. Het best zichtbaar is dat in Brasilia, een stad die in de jaren zestig vanuit het niets werd opgebouwd op de desolate hoogvlakte in t midden van t land. In één van de werken uit de installatie Oscarland worden gebouwen van Niemeyer op polaroidfoto’s vastgelegd. Het ontwikkelen van de polaroids is weer gefilmd op video. Er zijn geen mensen in beeld gebracht om het gevoel van science fiction te benadrukken. Alsof de gebouwen daar staan voor buitenaardse wezens, of net geland zijn vanuit de ruimte.
