When travelling Cuba for the first time in 2005 I noticed that the amount of people hanging in the streets was high. Of course this phenomenon is known from countries where the sun is shining every day and unemployment is high. But this hanging in the streets I considered a metaphor for waiting, waiting for something to happen.
Castro turned 81 in August 2007 and the Revolución is almost 49 years old. The frustration about the system is enormous, but most of the Cubans I talked to don't dare to hope for the better: "Fidel has the health of a child! He can become 200!"
The title of the installation is a reference to ‘Waiting for Godot’ by playwright Samuel Beckett. In the play the hopelessness of the human existence plays a central part. Hardly anything happens in the play. Neither in the video-installation.

The people in the video are not the ones who told me about their frustrations.
