40,000 Feet

Cuba/Bahamas/Jordan/Italy/Caucasus/U.K./the Netherlands 2005-2009 Multi channel video installation DV-pal, 4:3, colour, stereo Contemporary arts space Crane Arts in Philadelphia invited me to represent the first international exhibitor to incorporate the new video system in their project space Icebox. The location, a former Icebox -an enormous white cube- made me decide to exhibit the video-installation 40,000 Feet, a piece that I earlier presented at the 2x6 screens of Club 11 in Amsterdam. In the Icebox in Philadelphia I present an enhanced site-specific re-edit of the video installation by adding low laying fog. Further exhibitions as a single channel video in 2008: Salon in Museum Het Domein, Sittard Salon in Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam Living Apart Together in Petersburg Project Space, Amsterdam Watch an excerpt In Dutch, text from 2008: De video-installatie 40,000 Feet is een bewegend schilderij gemaakt voor de schermen in 11 in Amsterdam. 40,000 Feet bestaat uit beelden gefilmd vanuit diverse vliegtuigen in de atmosfeer boven Cuba, de Bahamas, de Kaukasus, Italië, Jordanië en andere landen ter wereld. De 2x6 schermen vormen een breed panorama en tonen een vliegreis langs traag voorbijtrekkende wolkenpartijen, condenssporen, oceanen en eilanden. In zijn boek 'De Kunst van het Reizen' besteedt de filosoof Alain de Botton aandacht aan het "buitenaardse landschap": "De wolken brengen kalmte. Beneden ons zijn vijanden en collega's, de plekken van onze angsten en ons verdriet. Piepklein zijn ze nu, krasjes in de aarde. En al kennen we deze oude les in perspectief nog zo goed, zelden lijkt hij zo waar als wanneer we met onze neus tegen het koude vliegtuigraampje gedrukt zitten."
